Do you know the value of your old South African Coins? There are companies waiting to buy these vintage coins for up to R20 000. UNION Coins – 1923-1960 These coins vary in silver content. Coins minted 1923-1950 will have a higher value than coins minted 1951-1960. 3d (tickey) only the 1931 3d has high value. 6d – 1 shilling – 2 shilling – 2 ½ shilling – 5 shilling NB: (All the above coins minted from 1965 onward have no silver value, they are made from nickel.) An easy way to check if your R1 coins are silver is by using a magnet, a fridge magnet will do. If the R1 coins stick to the magnet it is not silver and only worth face value.
